Polydipsia

Polydipsia is a condition with abnormal thirst in combination with a large intake of fluids. In psychogenic (primary) polydipsia, the fluid intake is voluntary and often occurs together with severe mental illness or developmental disorder. In serious cases, the patient can develop hyponatremia.

Important differential diagnoses: Diabetes insipidus is caused by a defect in the secretion or function of the antidiuretic hormone (ADH) and use of diuretics.
