Ovary with serous cystadenoma

Clinical story

73 years old female with a cyst in the right ovary. The cyst and a segment of the uterine tube were removed, and a section was taken for histological examination.

By gross examination, the ovary has two thin-walled cysts with serous fluid and smooth surfaces.

Comments

Section through an adnex shows microscopically a corpus albicans, as well as a cross-section of a fallopian tube. In the ovary, one large

and one small cyst can be seen. Flattened or cuboidal serous epithelium is lining the cysts. The epithelium is similar to the one in the fallopian tube.

Learning goals

To recognize serous cystadenoma of the ovary. Additionally, to understand the division of epithelial tumors of the ovary by histological type and the degree of malignancy.
