6. Parasternal long axis view We can also use a parasternal access to see the heart with ultrasound. The probe, this time pointed towards the right shoulder, is placed in the third or fourth intercostal space on the left side of the sternum. We then see a long axis view where the left ventricle dominates, together with the mitral and aortic valves. We also see an overview of the papillary muscles and chordae tendineae that attach to the mitral valve.
