FERRITIN

Ferritin consists of a shell of 24 chemically identical protein subunits surrounding a micelle of ferric hydroxyphosphate. The amount of iron varies but molecules completely filled with iron have a molecular weight of 900 000 Daltons and contain 4500-5000 ferric ions.

Ferritin can be identified by electron microscopy, but not light microscopy.
