VITAMIN E AND GENE REGULATION: Role of vitamin E in health and disease
One of the non-antioxidant roles of vitamin E is gene regulation.
Regulation of gene expression by α-tocopherol
Genes that are regulated by α-tocopherol can be placed in five functional groups:
Group 1: Genes that are involved in the uptake and degradation of α-tocopherol (e.g. αTTP and CYP3A)
Group 2: Genes that are involved in lipid uptake and atherosclerosis (e.g. down-regulation of CD36 and SR-B1)
Group 3: Genes that are implicated in the modulation of extracellular proteins
Group 4: Genes that are related to inflammation, cell adhesion, and platelet function
Group 5: Genes involved in cell signalling and cell cycle control
