At the TATA box, situated approximately 30 base pairs upstream of the transcription start site of the respective gene, the basal transcription machinery, including RNA polymerase II gathers. Along the DNA, upstream of the TATA box, there are many different proteins bound to specific areas of the DNA. These proteins are transcription factors, coordinating transcription of the gene.
