Early discoveries of Vitamin A toxicity

Acute toxicity
> 250 mg vitamin A in oil/liver
> 30 mg vitamin A in emulsion/tablets

Approximately 160 published cases between the age of 1 month and 7 years. Alomost all had taken water-soluble vitamin A preparations containing 30-180 mg vitamin A. In one case 180 mg vitamin A in oil solution was taken.

Chronic toxicity
> 50 mg vitamin A in oil/liver
> 10 mg vitamin A in emulsion/tablets

Approximately 100 published cases between the age of 4 months and 10 years. Most had taken water-soluble vitamin A preparations containing 10-50 mg vitamin A/day

Symptoms of toxicity

• Headache
• Pain in legs and joints
• Anorexia
• Womiting
• Nosebleed
• Dry skin
• Hair loss
• Fatigue
• Oedema
• Dizziness
