SAFE DOSE

• It is possible to define an intake for a population allowing for e.g. 1 %, 3 %, or 5 % to have serious symptoms.
• It is not possible to define an intake where nobody will experience symptoms.
• Some studies show that some individuals are particularly sensitive.
• The limit for toxicity is apparently influenced by other factors such as medications, dioxins,
  PCB (polychlorinated biphenyl), alcohol, vitamin D etc.

1. Threshold dose for toxicity

• 2.0 mg/kg/day retinol from food and oil-based solutions in approximately 1 year.
• 0.2 mg/kg/day retinol of water-soluble emulsions and solid preparations for some weeks or months.

2. An insecurity factor of 10 is used

3. Safe upper daily dose:

• 0.2 mg/kg/day retinol from food and oil-based solutions for approximately 1 year.
• 0.02 mg/kg/day retinol from emulsions and solid preparations for some weeks or months.
