OSTEOPOROSIS

Vitamin A intake and osteoporosis

Retinol has been shown to stimulate breakdown of the skeleton in animal studies, in vitro cell experiments, pharmacological studies and in clinical observations.

There are also strong epidemiological studies showing an increased risk for bone fractures with intake of retinol over 1,5 mg/day, but there are other large epidemiological studies not showing such an effect .

More studies are necessary to verify the real situation.

This far, in the new nordic recommendations, an upper recommended intake limit of 1,5 mg/day is set for postmenopausal women (experiencing a higher risk for osteoporosis).
